We all know people who get up at exactly the same time every day, eat the same things day after day and do the same workouts over and over without change. They claim it makes life easier if they simply stick to one routine and there’s no thinking about change.
But the same exercise routine every day also provides no challenge and eventually ends the exercise routine altogether. Here are seven reasons you should vary your life with a fitness routine change!
If you’re brand new to exercise or a particular routine, boredom is no issue, since your body is conditioning and getting used to the movements. After about six weeks, the break-in phase ends and it’s time to retrain the muscles for different movement and more benefit through a fitness routine change.
When you work the same muscle group every day, that group has no opportunity for recovery. Pain and eventual injury result. And other muscle groups have no chance to strengthen and develop. The key to working out is a balanced approach among all muscle groups.
The same exercise routine done repeatedly does not increase fitness and endurance levels. Instead, the body adapts, reaches a plateau, and gets comfortable at one consistent level. Changing your habits increases both fitness and endurance by building leaner (not necessarily bigger) muscle mass that’s stronger (the result of added resistance training with weights or stretch cords).
A single exercise routine results in weight loss for a period of time, but pounds stop dropping as your body fails to react and change with your workout. To increase weight loss, you work out longer, harder, or smarter. Longer means adding more time to your routine, which many people cannot accomplish. A harder workout entails heavier weights, steeper inclines or greater resistance. A smarter workout means the same amount of time and effort, but a variety of workouts to shock the body and move the scale down.
It’s the last thing most athletes want to hear: stop working out and get some rest. Or get to bed earlier. But additional rest represents a major and often necessary change to your workout. It’s difficult to turn off the TV or smartphone and your brain and simply lie down and drift off to sleep. This change involves fixing the relationship between working out and shutting down. Rest is not a four-letter word for wasted time; it’s a daily vacation that rebuilds muscle tissue and energy levels and empties the mind of training troubles.
People you meet during a new workout become new workout partners and friends and even workout watchdogs. You count on them to keep you going when working out is what you don’t want to do that day. They count reps, convince you to push for one more set, and complement your weight loss.
Working out alone works for some people; they enjoy the peace and solitude. Others love and depend on their personal trainer, but wonder what to do when they travel or their trainer leaves town and there’s a need to augment their fitness routine. Tablets, smartphones, watches, and other devices now connect with training apps, calorie counters, heart monitors, step counters and other activity trackers. A fitness routine change is a good time to try new technology and refresh your fitness.
