Getting through a tough workout can be a real struggle. There’s going to be times when you just want to throw in your sweat-soaked towel and take the easy way out, but like Teddy Roosevelt said, “Nothing in this world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, and difficulty.” So, when you’re thinking about giving up on your fitness plan, try inserting some positivity into your workout.
However, if good old Teddy’s quote seems like a little too much of a mouthful, try these 12 chants below to help you make it through your tough workout!
Quitters never win, and you’re in this to succeed. So chant this if you ever feel the urge to give up on your tough workout to remind yourself that you’re not a quitter. Not now, not ever.
We often see this mantra related to our favorite snacks: “just one more chip…one more slice…one more little bite won’t hurt…,” we tell ourselves. Applying this same logic to your fitness goals is a great way to push yourself to work harder. Next time you’re doing your workout, encourage yourself to take it a step further. If your goal is to do 10 pull-ups a day, try for 11 next time and see if you can steadily increase over time.
Looking and feeling your best doesn’t only have to apply to “beach body season.” It’s easy to regress into bad nutrition and fitness habits when you don’t plan on showing off in your new swimsuit, but it’s important to keep on track throughout the year to avoid having to start all over again when summer comes around.
There’s going to be times when you start doubting yourself, especially when going through a really tough workout. Try saying this simple chant when you just need a little extra motivation.
Excuses aren’t going to get you to the healthy body you want, so why waste time making them?
Your workout may seem tough and daunting, but you’re going to be thanking yourself later when you don’t pop the button off of your favorite new pair of jeans. So take the time to work on being healthier now or pay a lot of money to your doctor later in life. A gym membership can be considerably cheaper today than medical bills in the future.
Procrastinating is never a good idea, remember doing it in school and regretting it every single time? Pushing off your workout can lead to never getting to it at all, so instead of saying “I’ll get to it later,” go for it now.
It can be easy to get down about not meeting a specific fitness goal, but it’s important to remember to never give up. Maybe that five pounds you were hoping to lose by the end of this week actually ended up being two pounds. Consider your fitness goals as a marathon, not a race, and appreciate and reward all progress no matter how small it may seem, because at the end of the day you’re taking steps that are paying off.
Positive thinking can be a key part in motivating yourself to workout. Try ditching “if” statements and replace them with “when” statements to both encourage yourself and to hold yourself accountable. For example, instead of saying, “If I do go to the gym this week, I’m going to work more on my legs” with “When I go to the gym this week, I’m going to work more on my legs.”
You’ll need goals. If you don’t have them, create some. Write them down. Stick them on your refrigerator. Having something to work towards is great motivation when working out.
It may be tempting to give up in the middle of a workout but always remember that you’re working toward something so it’s worth it to keep going.
Remember that your hard work is going to pay off in the end. Whether you’re looking to slim down, tone up, or simply to lead a healthier lifestyle, your workout is leading you to a better you.
